According to khaliijii folklore, the first major wind of the year, the shamaal, occurs around khamsah-wa-3ishriin maayuu. It is known locally as al-7afaar since it drills huge depressions in the dunes of al-barr.
al-hawaa al-thaniyah arrives in early yuunyuu, coinciding with the dawn star, Pleiades, and is nicknamed ruu7 thawriyah. During this time, which brings wind much more violent than any other, fisherman remain in port because folklore has it that this wind devours ships.
Near the end of June, the last of the year's winds arrives, known as ad-dabaran or "the follower." It's a strong wind and blows for several days. Locals keep doors and windows firmly shut, often placing towels around the cracks of the doors to avoid the interiors of the houses being covered in a fine ghbaar.
